Looking after your Areas and Regions
At Upskill People we’re used to working with larger organisations, especially in Retail and Hospitality, who are most likely to use Area and Regional Managers. These roles are usually accounted for under Head Office cost centres but are most likely field-based roles. Let’s look at Rise and Dine again…
Rebecca Brown is the Regional Manager for “Rise and Dine Deli (North)” and she looks after her 3 Area Managers:
David Arnold (“Deli (North East) – North”)
Silvia Carter (“Deli (North West) – North”)
Dominic Bedford (“Deli (Scotland) – North”)
Right now, Rebecca is set up within a single location called Regional Managers and the job type “RM” is set up for “User’s location only”. What that does is to only give Rebecca access to her fellow Regional Managers:
This serves no purpose and most certainly will not help Rebecca look after her Area Managers or their teams.
How to set up an Area Manager
Using David Arnold as our example. Create a new location in his area:
… and put David in it. His Job Type stays as “Area Manager”:
Make sure that the “Area Manager” Job Type reporting access is set as “User’s location and sibling locations”:
As an Area Manager, David just needs access to his own learning and reporting for his teams (including being able to report on his own progress):
How to set up a Regional Manager
Create a new location (not a group) inside the relevant region and edit the associated Regional Manager and put them in this new location:
Ensure that the Regional Manager Job Type reporting access is set to “User’s group and subgroups”:
As a Regional Manager, Rebecca has exactly the same learning profile and exactly the same tools as her Area Managers and they are all located in their own locations within the relevant parts of the overall organisational structure.
The difference between their reporting views lies solely in how their job types are configured slightly differently to achieve the desired result:
