Before we can even begin, it’s important that you have access to your own Vimeo account from https://vimeo.com

The free account is great, but it won’t do everything you’ll need. We recommend that you pick their Starter plan (from https://vimeo.com/upgrade-plan ) as a minimum because you’ll need access to their custom video player.

So, you’ve created your brilliant new video, and want to get it all loaded up onto its relevant course. The first thing to do is to upload it to your Vimeo account:

It'll take a little while to do its thing, and then when it's done, give your video a proper title and we also recommend using a sensible folder structure (you’ll be thankful for this when you have a lot of videos to sort through!).

The essential options

At first, the various options may seem a little daunting especially if you’re new to Vimeo. Here are the main things to sort out:

  • Thumbnail image

  • Privacy settings

  • Embed options

  • Player settings

Thumbnail image

From the Video details page add a thumbnail by selecting it from your video

Play the video and pause it on the frame you want and then press Select this frame

Privacy settings

From the Share button make sure you use the Hide from Vimeo option. To keep your content private:

Your changes will automatically be saved as you go.

Embed options

And press Embed to restrict access further to only those domains who you want people to access your video from. This might be your own business domain like your website or wherever you are serving your video content from:

You get the domain name from your browser, top left:

Player settings

Now set up how the video behaves when it loads, and you do this in the Player settings starting with Appearance:

Flip the Controls sliders as shown above, and switch off everything else! (the last thing you need is for learners to go off to other areas of the internet liking and sharing, and generally not focussing on completing their course!). Save these settings as an Embed preset so that it is really quick to do for your future videos.

Replacing your video with a new one

If you need to replace the video (rather than upload a completely new one and start the whole process again!) then that’s easy too. Just pick Replace … from the “3 dots” (top right):

You’ll end up with a clean, safe video ready to embed into your course just like this one:

So, you’re all set with your video, here are some great follow-up guides for you:
